What does Tautoko Mai do?

We support individuals, family/whānau and communities impacted by sexual harm and family violence. This includes counselling, medical care, court support, prevention programmes, and education.

General Questions

Is your service free?

Our services are completely free, including crisis support, counselling, social work, and medical care. For some specialised or longer-term support, we may help you apply for ACC or other funding.

Can I request printed resources or translated versions?

Yes. Many of our resources are available in Te Reo Māori, Easy Read, and accessible formats. Contact us for a bulk or specific request.

Do I need a GP referral to get help?

No. You can refer yourself directly using our online form or by calling us 
directly. Professionals can also make referrals on someone’s behalf 
(with their permission).

Confidentiality & Safety

Is everything confidential?

Yes. We keep your information private and secure. You choose what you share and when. We’ll only share information if there’s a serious and immediate safety concern.

Will I be pressured to make a police report?

No. We support your choices. You’re never required to report to police to access our services and we’ll support you either way.

Do you work with people who have caused harm?

No. Tautoko Mai supports people who have been harmed. If you’re seeking help to change harmful behaviour, we can connect you with the right services.

Counselling & ACC

How does ACC Sensitive Claims work?

ACC offers free therapy for people affected by sexual abuse or assault. We can help you apply, choose a therapist, and understand your rights. You don’t need a police report or official documentation.

Will I be pressured to make a police report?

No. We support your choices. You’re never required to report to police to access our services and we’ll support you either way.

Can I choose who I work with?

Yes. We try our best to match you with a worker who suits your needs. Let us know if you’d prefer someone of a specific gender, cultural background, or with particular experience.

We support people across Bay of Plenty and Waikato” If you are outside our areas we support we can connect you with the right services in your area.

Do you offer online or phone sessions?

Yes. We offer flexible options including phone, Video Call and in-person sessions depending on what’s safest and easiest for you.

What if I need help urgently?

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 111.

Can I bring a support person?

Absolutely. You’re welcome to bring a trusted friend, family or whānau member, or support worker to any appointment.
